Last night I was taking to my mother-in-law on the phone and she had mentioned the President Hinckley's son, a member of the quorum of the seventy, was to preside over their stake conference this weekend, but was suddenly called back to Salt Lake City. The moment she said that I thought for sure President Hinckley wasn't doing well. And sure enough, my dad called like an hour later to tell me he had passed away...so sad. What a blessing and an honor to be alive during his tenure as prophet of our church. What an amazing man. Those of you not of the same faith, didn't need to be a member of our church to recognize his faith, dedication and compassion to all people regardless of religion.
I had the opportunity to meet him on July 24, 1997. I was a counselor at Academy For Girls and we were on Temple Square in Salt Lake City as they were celebrating the Pioneers coming into the Salt Lake Valley. There was a crowd of people and my girls and I walked over to it and there he was. He saw all the girls and walked right over to us and shook each of our hands. I was so overwhelmed by shaking his hand I didn't really say anything, but I felt it. I felt his love for me and the I felt a pouring out of the spirit that he was indeed a prophet, foreordained to lead us in this modern dispensation of time. Possibly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I will miss him, but he has left a legacy for each of us to follow!

Well said, Amanda. I bet he's happy to be back with his wife, though. I remember how sad he was when she died.
