What Is May Day?
1. In pagan times 1st May was celebrated as the first day of spring and therefore rebirth after the barrenness of winter. In England the celebrations were presided over by a ceremonial king and queen of May while young men and women danced around the phallic May-pole to encourage fertility.
2. May Day (May 1) is a spring festival celebrating human fertility and the renewal of nature. The festival originated with the celebration of the Roman goddess Flora and spread to other countries of the Roman Empire. May Day was especially popular in England during medieval times. Activities centered around the maypole, a tree collected from the woods and brought to the village to celebrate the upcoming summer.
3. I always thought it was a day to celebrate spring and as kids we would leave flowers on our neighbor's doorsteps and we'd take flowers to our teachers. But hey...I like the definitions above, happy baby making everyone!
